Today starts the weeklong observance of Fire Prevention Week.
Each year, the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) designates a specific theme and this year's is:
Always HAVE TWO WAYS OUT. It's a basic concept that can save your life or someone you love--even your pets. If your primary exit is blocked, go to the next one as long
as it is safe.
Check doors for heat--if the door is hot, go another way and away from the fire.
Have a meeting place--one spot everyone in the household knows to go to. Remember: it
should be away from the fire yet close enough that everybody is familiar with it. If you have
relatives or friends visiting, make sure they know where to go.
Do you know E.D.I.T.H.? Exit Drills in the Home save lives. Know how to get out safely and practice them. This is the time to ask questions or modify your escape plan--not when you need to get out quickly.
Remember--fire safety is a 24/7/365 concept. Simple concepts can save your life
so take a few moments once a month to go over them with those you love.
